What to check on a pre-owned Hermès bag
Start with size and construction. The Birkin comes in 25, 30, 35 and 40, and the Kelly in sizes from 25 to 35, either Sellier, with stiff sides and external stitching, or Retourne, which is softer and slouchier.
Leather changes both look and wear. Togo and Clemence are grained and forgiving, Epsom is embossed, light and holds its shape, and Box calf is smooth and shows scratches. Hardware is usually gold or palladium plated.
Beyond the Birkin and Kelly, the Constance, with its H clasp, and the Evelyne, a perforated crossbody, are the Hermès bags most often found pre-owned and usually cost far less.
Each bag carries a stamp with a letter for its production year, which helps date it. A Birkin or Kelly normally comes with a lock, keys, clochette and dust bag, so check what is included. Corner wear, darkened handles and loss of structure all lower the price.
